Core competencies for frontline complex care providers

Building the complex care field Education & training Workforce development

Core competencies for frontline complex care providers includes the first set of core competencies designed for the complex care field. As they apply across discipline, profession, and context, the competencies are applicable for healthcare, behavioral health, and social service practitioners who regularly encounter people with complex needs but may not be working in dedicated complex care programs.

The report also describes the development process for the complex care core competencies. The complex care core competencies were developed by a working group made up of experts from diverse backgrounds and sectors, including complex care consumers.

The report also outlines which members of the complex care workforce should master the competencies, and includes an overview of how the competencies should be applied and the next steps to implement the competencies in the field.

For a document that just lists the complex care core competencies, see our brief Complex care core competencies: Developing the frontline workforceFor a toolkit of resources for educators and trainers looking to teach and train the complex care core competencies, see our toolkit Implementing the complex care core competencies.
