Background
Beginning in July 2025, New Jersey residents enrolled in NJ FamilyCare (Medicaid) could start using their insurance to get housing services. Eligible Medicaid members can now use their insurance to get help finding a place to live – just like they use their insurance to get their teeth cleaned at the dentist or get a flu shot at their doctor’s office. The new service is called the NJ FamilyCare Housing Supports Program.
As one of New Jersey’s four Regional Health Hubs, the Camden Coalition is working with the state Division of Medical Assistance and Human Services (DMAHS) to raise awareness about the program.
What is the Housing Supports Program?
The program helps NJ FamilyCare (Medicaid) members of all ages who have both a housing need and a health condition.
Eligible members are connected to a housing supports provider that can provide services to help them:
- Find a place to live
- Move into housing
- Stay in housing
- Make home modifications or changes needed to support their health
These supports help members achieve housing stability so they can better manage their health and wellbeing.
Who is eligible to receive services?
A person is eligible if they meet all three of the criteria below:
- Have NJ FamilyCare (Medicaid) health insurance
- Have a housing need – like being homeless, risk of losing current housing, recently released from jail, unsafe or unstable living situation
- Have a health condition – like diabetes, depression, pregnancy, substance use, physical disability
